Dudley Zoological Gardens Rebrand

Please note this was a university project for my final major project.

Dudley zoo opened to the public on 18th May 1937 , the 40 acre site is located within the grounds of Dudley Castle. A team of modernist architects designed the zoo using reinforced concrete creating a revolutionary new design of building, Tectons. With over 200 species of animals the zoo is linked to international conservation and breeding programmes and has received many awards.

'You are required to produce a full rebrand for the zoo. This will include a revised corporate identity, a logo which includes some aspects of modernist design, printed materials, digital materials and signage. You must maintain a consistent brand identity when transferring across different mediums and platforms.'

I always start my projects by sketching rough ideas, this is the best way to generate ideas quickly.
I combined inspiration and reference material with my ideas.

Overall I produced six final logos, I went into full colour experimentation for each. I have displayed them in black for comparison, all logos need to work well in one colour first.

The final chosen logo decision was made due to the bold form of the 'D' letter shape which represents the block form of the modernist tectons. Inside imagery of a giraffe and castle summaries the zoo best.

I have placed textures best related to the zoo inside the logo. This shows the fluidity this logo has allowing a logo system to be possibly formed. I didn't go ahead with this idea, however it could definitely work.

This piece of exhibit signage runs by the rules of grouping each animal in to categories. The Primates are blue - this is the same blue used in the branding for the logo allowing everything to be tied together. Visual and written information is displayed on the sign to educate guests.

I have produced a banner to work with Facebook. I have applied it in context.

I adjusted the banners positioning of elements and shown how it can work on a billboard.

The zoo website is clean and straight to the point, a rule which modernism is all about. I designed the site to work on 100% width for parallax scrolling - preferably to be put together in Adobe Muse.
